Anterior lumbar interbody fusion for the spondylodiscitis following removal of intervertebral disc

Abstract
1. We have performed anterior lumbar interbody fusion for 3 cases of spondylodiscitis following removal of the lumbar discs from 1 June 1978 to 30 June 1979.
2. If unexplained severe back pain and muscle spasm develop following a more or less painless interval after removal of the lumbar disc, then spondylodiscitis should be considered. In the suspected case it is important to look for the most frequent signs: ESR, plain X-ray findings and tomography in order to initiate an adequate therapy in due time.
3. It may be reasonable to treat such a patient conservatively for a time. If response to rest, immobilization and antibiotics is unsatisfactory as judged by persistence of pain and elevated ESR, surgical intervention is indicated.
4. An anterior lumbar interbody fusion is considered to be good, not only because of good stabilization of the spines, and of immediate disappearance of the back pain, but also because of shortening of duration of the treatment.
